Disturbing Stuff.

In an interview with Brit Hume of Fox News, President Bush admitted that he directly authorized the torture of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

BUSH: One such person who gave us information was Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. … And I’m in the Oval Office and I am told that we have captured Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the professionals believe he has information necessary to secure the country. So I ask what tools are available for us to find information from him and they gave me a list of tools, and I said are these tools deemed to be legal? And so we got legal opinions before any decision was made.

This is especially interesting considering the sleeper bill that Representative John Conyers Jr. has introduced in the House. The bill would establish a National Council on Presidental War Powers Civil Liberties to “investigate the broad range of policies of the Bush administration that were undertaken by the Bush administration under claims of unreviewable war powers.”

It’s a pretty interesting thought but when it comes down to it, I doubt that it will pass and I don’t think it should. The best way to get over Bush’s abuses of power is to move forward and reevaluate the role of the President under Barack Obama, who I seriously doubt will abuse the powers of the office. And even though $3 Million is a pretty small number when it comes to government initiatives, it could go a long way when applied to other underfunded programs.

UPDATE: Obama agrees. “We need to look forward.”
